Affiliate Marketing For Books: Can You Make Money With It?

affiliate marketing for books

Reading books is awesome. It can really change your perspective on a lot of things.

And they’re quite cheap. So you don’t really need to invest a lot in order to learn about a certain topic (at least on the surface level).

But you know what’s even better than reading books? Selling them!

That does sound better, doesn’t it?

But is it even possible? What if you’re not a writer?

I’m sure you’ve heard about affiliate marketing. It’s probably the best way to make money online at the moment, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

If you’re here to find out whether or not you can sell books and get commissions with affiliate marketing, then you’re in the right place!

In this article, we will go over everything you need to know in order to start making money by recommending your favorite books.

Let’s jump straight into it:

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

In order to have a better understanding of how everything works when it comes to selling books for commissions on the internet, we first need to go back to basics.

So … how does affiliate marketing work?

Well, the business model is quite simple actually. You recommend products (or services) that someone else creates, and you get a commission if a customer buys through your affiliate link.

This business model has been around for decades and is a very legitimate way to make money online.

Many people (including myself) were drawn to this type of business model because there is no product creation involved. That takes away all the hassle (believe me, it’s very stressful to create products if you’ve never done it before).

So, yes, you should get excited. Affiliate marketing has A TON of potential to help you get to the dream that everyone is looking for on the internet: passive income.

How Much Money Can I Make With Affiliate Marketing?

Another very common question that many beginners have when first starting out in the online space. So … how much can you make?

The answer you probably don’t want to hear is “it depends”. I don’t want to seem cheesy or anything, but that’s a quite accurate answer.

To put it nicely, you get what you put into it. The same way like you do with anything.

You will not look like a bodybuilder if you go to the gym for 1 week. That’s just the reality.

Look, I started affiliate marketing since 2013 and I’m making good money for myself. To the point where I started this blog because I just enjoy helping people.

This wasn’t the case in the beginning. Most people get discouraged because they don’t see results right away.

Can you make 5 figures per month with affiliate marketing? Yes. I’m telling you from experience that you can.

Can you make 5 figures a month with affiliate marketing by promoting only books? Yes, you can, but I don’t see a reason why you would.

The profit that you can make by selling books are very low. Because the prices of books are very low.

If you don’t care so much about making a full time income with affiliate marketing, then go ahead and recommend books. If you want to do that because you enjoy it, that’s great.

If you create an affiliate blog and recommend books from Amazon, you will have a high conversion rate.

Also, the cookie duration is quite high on Amazon. Speaking of which:

What Is A Cookie Period?

When someone clicks on your affiliate link, they get tagged with a small piece of code which is called a cookie (funny, right?). That cookie will stay in their browser for a limited period of time.

What does that mean for you? Well, if they don’t buy straight away, you still have a chance to get credit for the sale in the future.

For example, Amazon has a cookie period of 24 hours. That doesn’t seem long, I know.

BUT Amazon is very good at converting people.

Let’s say someone clicks on your affiliate link which takes them to Amazon. They might not buy anything right away, but it’s a high chance that they will buy something from Amazon in the next 24 hours (let’s be honest, all of us buy stuff from Amazon).

That means that if they buy ANYTHING ELSE from Amazon in the next 24 hours, you will get a commission from EVERYTHING in their cart.

That sounds awesome, doesn’t it?

Ideas for Using Affiliate Links as a Book Blogger

The easiest way you can make affiliate commissions with books are by starting a blog. That’s because you don’t need to pay for traffic.

I don’t recommend using paid traffic when promoting books, simply because you will most likely not break even. But when it comes to blogging, you don’t really need to pay anything (apart from hosting).

There are a couple of ways that you can get commissions from the books you recommend on your blog. The first one (and the one I recommend the most) is to write book reviews.

If you enjoy reading, it would be quite easy for you to write reviews for every book that you like. At the end of the review, include an affiliate link to the book.

If your reader clicks on it and buys the book from Amazon, you will get a commission from the book sale, along with whatever else is in his Amazon cart (as mentioned earlier).

Also, you can write what we call “best X for Y” type post. For example “best books for gardening” or “best books for starting an online business”.

Try to do a bit of keyword research before. For example, you can use Google autosuggest.

Type “best books for” in the Google search bar and see what comes up. If Google suggest a certain result, that means that many people are searching for that query.

Which means that if you write an article and rank it on the first page of Google, you will get traffic to your blog. And that means that you have a higher chance of getting more commissions.

Also, you can write articles about the best books a certain author wrote. For example, if you read a lot of books written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, you can write a post with the title “Best Books By Fyodor Dostoevsky” or “Dostoevsky Best Books”.

Really, there are endless ways to get traffic to your blog. Just stay don’t give up when you see that you don’t make money straight away.

Ranking on Google takes time. That’s why most people quit blogging in the first couple of months. Don’t be one of those people.

Also, another way to do it is creating a “Recommendations” page on your blog. Inside, you can include your favorite books on various topics.

For example: “Favorite Marketing Books”, “Favorite Fitness Books” and so on.

Conclusion

Hopefully you now have a better understanding on how to make money by recommending books. If you enjoy reading and want to do this as a side hustle, then go ahead and do that.

I wouldn’t recommend promoting just books simply because of the low profit margins that are associated with it. Affiliate marketing is a great way to make money online, and you should fully take advantage of it.

If you enjoy writing and want to create a blog, I suggest taking a look at Affilorama. It will teach you how to create a profitable affiliate blog with a minimum investment.

On the other hand, if you see the potential of affiliate marketing and have some money to invest in paid ads, I recommend you invest in a high quality course like Commission Hero.

The course creator (Robby Blanchard) is the #1 Clickbank affiliate in the world and he teaches you everything you need in order to make as much money as possible with paid ads. It’s the best affiliate course that I took.

Whatever you choose, just remember to stay consistent and believe in yourself. If you do that, there’s nothing stopping you!
