The Target affiliate program has become increasingly popular during the past couple of years. But why is that?
Well, since Amazon decided to heavily cut down affiliate commissions, more and more people started to look elsewhere for products to promote.
It just doesn’t make sense anymore to promote products from Amazon. 2% commissions? No thank you.
Does Target solve that problem? Is it really any good? Well, if you’re here to find out whether or not you should consider promoting products from Target, you’re in the right place!
By the end of this article, you will know exactly if you should join this affiliate program or if you should consider other options (more on that later).
Target Affiliate Program
Target is a company that needs no introduction. It is one of the biggest brands in the United States and it will most likely continue to stay this way for a long time.
The program is hosted on a third party network called Impact Radius. In order to promote products from Target, you should first register on this network. In order to do that, you can click here.
Keep in mind that in order to get accepted, you will need to have your own website. Also, most of your traffic should come from the United States.
However, when I applied for the program I didn’t get much traffic at all on my website and they still accepted me. Therefore, if you have any kind of website they will most likely accept you.
If you think about it, all they want is to make more money. So, if you make affiliate sales you help them make more money by design. It only make sense for them to accept all affiliates.
If you want to learn how to build your own affiliate website, you should check out Affilorama. It is really helpful in that regard.
The downside is that Target ships only in the United States, therefore it wouldn’t make sense to promote products to people from other countries.
Whenever someone clicks your affiliate link, they will get tagged with a cookie that lasts for 7 days. Therefore, if your referral buys anything from Target in the next week after they click your link, you will receive credit for that sale.
Target Affiliate Program: Products
Target has a ton of products in various niches. In order to make money with affiliate marketing, you first need to decide what products you can promote.
That’s because you will need to create a niche website based on the category of products you choose. For example, if you choose “Health & Beauty”, you will need to write articles about products in that niche, product reviews, guides and so on.
You should choose a category that you are somewhat interested in. Also, it should pay decent commissions because you don’t want to put all that time and energy for nothing (more on that later).
Target has a very unique way of approaching affiliate marketing. They have a lot of products on their website but they only allow you to promote a couple of them.
Here are the categories of products you can promote:
- Apparel & Accessories
- Home & Outdoor Living
- Baby Gear & Furniture
- Health & Beauty
As you can see, you are limited to only 4 categories of products. This means you can’t really promote the expensive ones which is not that great.
Target Affiliate Program: Commissions
Now that you know the boring details of this affiliate program, it’s time to take a look at the commission structure.
We do this in order to see whether or not it’s even worth bothering to sign up.
As you can see, the commissions vary quite a bit. Apart from the Health & Beauty niche, they grow in proportion of the amount of sales you make.
The more sales you make, the higher the commissions you receive. To be honest, these commissions are even lower than what Amazon pays.
Even if you make more than 10.000 sales, you will still get maximum 8% commission, which is very bad.
Target Affiliate Program: Pros And Cons
In order to see if it’s even worth signing up for the program, we need to take a look at the pros and cons.
Every affiliate program has good and bad things about it, and Target is no exception.
The biggest advantage of the Target affiliate program is that it’s a well known brand. But why should you care about this? Well, when you refer people to well known websites, they tend to convert much better.
Even in the age of technology, people are still scared to put their credit card information in obscure websites. There are still a lot of scammers out there and customers know it.
Therefore, when you send people to Target, they will most likely not worry about someone stealing their money.
The second “pro” of this affiliate program is that the cookie lasts for up to 7 days. Sometimes you can get commissions for products you didn’t even recommend because the customers don’t always buy what you recommend them.
Also, they don’t usually buy right away for various reasons. Some people need to save money in order to purchase a specific product, while others need to talk with their wives or girlfriends.
When it comes to purchasing expensive products, people need some more time to make a decision. Therefore, you can’t rely on impulse purchases.
The 7 day cookie is a great aspect of the Target affiliate program and many people are very happy to have it.
The biggest con is obviously the low commissions. A maximum of 8% commission is simply bad. Even if you manage to get more than 10k sales per month, it will still be too low.
And believe me, making 10k sales per month from an affiliate website is very hard. You would need a ton of traffic to do so.
If you choose to promote digital products, you would be able to get 50% commissions or more (more on that later).
If you’re the type of person who enjoys writing content about a niche they are passionate about, then this aspect will not bother you as much. However, if you want to build a sustainable affiliate business in the lowest amount of time possible, then you might want to consider other options (like Facebook ads).
Also, Target has less products on stock compared to Amazon. This means that if you were to refer a customer to Target and they are out of stock, you will probably lose the sale if they don’t refill their inventory in the next 7 days.
Target Affiliate Program: Is It Worth It?
Target affiliate program is worth it only if you already have other sources of income and you just want to build an affiliate blog and have fun.
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve built this blog for the same reason. Helping people with useful content is very rewarding and fun.
However, I also have other businesses that make good money, so I can luckily afford to have a bit of fun. So, if you don’t care so much about making money right away, then by all means go ahead and start an affiliate blog where you can promote products from Target.
Keep in mind that the commissions are insanely low. For the same reason I don’t recommend someone start an Amazon affiliate blog, I also don’t recommend you go and start a Target one.
Maximum 8% commission is simply not enough. Not only that, but there’s also the stock problem. So, even if you refer someone that genuinely wants to buy a product from Target, you’re still at risk of not making the sale.
They often run out of stock for the popular products and the customers will need to wait until they refill it. If it takes them more than 1 week to do that, you even lose the benefit of the tracking cookie.
And that’s why I suggest you take a look at other options.
Now that you know everything about the Target affiliate program, you might think that it’s just not worth signing up for.
Writing content on an affiliate blog can be really challenging for some people. Not only that, but you’re working in the hopes of getting peanuts for your efforts.
So … what other alternatives are there? Well, you can promote digital products from Clickbank or JVZoo and make better commissions. The digital products work really well because the creators can afford to pay you more as an affiliate.
Also, you can become good at Google, YouTube or Facebook ads and get traffic that way. I actually recommend this because these platforms are very good at targeting the right buyers for your offers.
My go-to way of making money online is affiliate marketing via Facebook ads simply because it’s very profitable. Nowadays I spend around 1 hour per day to check my ads and it’s going really well.
If you want to learn how to do exactly that, I highly suggest checking out Robby Blanchard’s Commission Hero. It will teach you everything you need to know about affiliate marketing with Facebook ads.
